Documentary proof of the existence and amount of your passive income. For retirees: pension certificate plus a guarantee of its receipt or availability in Portugal. For rentiers: lease agreements with declared income on the most recent tax return. For dividend / royalty income: brokerage or contract statements with consistent payment history.
Pension stubs, rent receipts, dividend confirmations, or royalty payouts covering 12 months and showing consistent income at or above your household threshold (€920/mo sole applicant; +€460 per additional adult; +€276 per dependent child).
Bank statements covering the last 6+ months showing income deposits matching your declared passive sources.
A Portuguese bank account in the applicant's name showing a balance equal to 12 months at the household income threshold. Working norm: €11,040 sole applicant; +€5,520 per additional adult; +€3,312 per dependent child. A foreign-account balance is regularly rejected; the buffer must be held in a Portuguese-domiciled account.
Most recent tax return or equivalent fiscal certificate showing your passive income was declared and you are tax-resident in your current country.
Police clearance certificate from your country of citizenship and from every country where you've resided more than 1 year in the past 5 years. Each must be apostilled per the Hague Convention.
Each apostilled criminal record translated into Portuguese by a sworn translator.
Private health insurance valid in Portugal covering your entry-visa period, with at least €30,000 medical coverage, no co-pay, and no waiting period.
Lease agreement (12 months or longer is the working norm), property deed (certidão de registo predial), or notarized hosting declaration (declaração de hospedagem) for your accommodation in Portugal.
Get your Número de Identificação Fiscal — required for renting, opening a bank account, and most administrative tasks. Can be obtained remotely via a tax representative before arrival.
Open a Portuguese bank account in your own name. Required to evidence the savings buffer; also simplifies rent, utilities, and AIMA fee payment.
A signed authorization allowing AIMA to query your Portuguese criminal record. Signed at the consulate during the visa appointment.
Pay the consular visa fee at the time of your appointment. Standard rate is ~€90 but can vary by consulate.
Book and attend your appointment at the Portuguese consulate (or VFS Global center) covering your country of residence. Submit all originals + biometrics.
Once approved, the consulate stamps a 4-month, 2-entry residence visa in your passport. Book your flight to Portugal.
Within the 4-month validity of your entry visa, schedule your AIMA appointment online to convert it into a 2-year residence permit.
Attend your AIMA appointment, present originals of every document submitted at the consulate plus your entry visa, and complete biometrics.
Pay the AIMA residence-permit fee at the appointment.
AIMA issues your 2-year residence permit card and mails it to your Portuguese address. You're a Portuguese resident.
