Italian tax identification number. Required for company setup, lease registration, and bank account.
Italian-language business plan covering activity, target market, financial projections, and use of capital. Required for CCIAA attestation.
Statement from the Chamber of Commerce confirming the applicant has sufficient economic resources to conduct the proposed activity. The single highest-leverage document.
If your profession is regulated in Italy (medicine, law, architecture, engineering, etc.), obtain authorization to practice from the relevant ordine professionale before applying.
For founders / entrepreneurs: constitute an Italian company (Srl, SpA, ditta individuale, or società di persone) and register it at the Registro Imprese. May be done in parallel with nulla osta in some cases.
For corporate officers: board resolution from the Italian company appointing the applicant to the role.
Lease must be registered at Agenzia delle Entrate. Located in the province where the Questura will issue the nulla osta.
File the nulla osta request at the Questura of your future Italian city of residence. Includes business plan, CCIAA attestation, accommodation, and qualifications.
Questura issues the nulla osta, valid 90–180 days depending on category. Required for the consular type-D application.
Submit the Lavoro Autonomo application via the Ministero dell'Interno portal on the announced click-day. Quotas fill in minutes/hours.
Complete the type-D long-stay visa application form. Italian consulates require in-person submission.
Signed letter describing the planned activity, ties to your current country, and intended Italian city.
Police certificate from country of citizenship and every country of residence > 6 months in the past 5 years. Apostilled per Hague Convention; sworn Italian translation.
Private health insurance valid in Italy, Schengen-compliant (≥€30,000), no copay/waiting periods. Sworn Italian translation if not natively in Italian.
Pay the type-D visa fee at the consular appointment.
Book and attend the in-person consular appointment with all originals.
Once approved, the consulate stamps a type-D visa in your passport. Book your flight.
CRITICAL: file Kit Giallo (Modulo 1 + Modulo 2) at any Poste Italiane Sportello Amico within 8 working days. Missing this voids the visa.
Pay the Kit Giallo fee: ~€30 form + €70.46 stamp + €30.46 postal = ~€131.
Register residence at the local comune (town hall). The anagrafe certificate is required for SSN and tax-residency status.
Open your Partita IVA (VAT number) at Agenzia delle Entrate and register for INPS contributions. Required to invoice and contribute legally.
Open an Italian bank account once you have your Partita IVA. Required for invoicing and tax compliance.
Attend the Questura appointment scheduled via Kit Giallo. Submit originals and provide fingerprints.
Pick up your permesso di soggiorno from the Questura 30–90 days after biometrics. Renewable annually.
