Identify the Italian ancestor's birth comune, emigration date, and naturalization history. The foundation of the dossier.
Confirm the claim goes through a parent or grandparent (NOT great-grandparent or earlier). Confirm the Italian ancestor held only Italian citizenship at the applicant's birth (or at the ancestor's death).
Choose a specialist firm for your path. Specialists know the comune-of-origin contacts, document standards, and consular reviewer expectations.
Request the long-form birth-record extract (estratto integrale) from the comune of origin. May take 30–90 days to receive.
Marriage certificate from the comune of origin or wherever the ancestor was married.
Death certificate where applicable. Critical for proving the ancestor's citizenship status at the relevant date.
Critical: either the certificate of naturalization from the destination country (proving when the ancestor lost Italian citizenship) OR a certified 'no record of naturalization' letter (proving the ancestor never naturalized). For US applicants: USCIS Genealogy Program.
Long-form birth certificate of each intermediate generation between the Italian ancestor and the applicant.
Marriage certificates for each intermediate generation.
Long-form birth certificate of the applicant.
Marriage / divorce records of the applicant.
Each foreign-language vital record must be apostilled by the issuing country's Secretary of State / equivalent.
Translation by a sworn Italian translator. Done after apostille (the apostille must also be translated).
Variations like Maria Rossi / Mary Ross / Marie Ross-Smith must be reconciled with affidavits or court orders. Italian consulates and courts are strict.
Three paths: (a) consulate of competent jurisdiction; (b) comune in Italy after establishing residency; (c) Tribunale di Roma via Italian counsel (required for 1948 cases).
Book the consular appointment via Prenot@mi. NYC, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, London have 1–10 year waits.
If using the in-Italy comune path, establish residency in the chosen Italian comune (typically the ancestor's comune of origin) — lease, anagrafe registration, codice fiscale. Maintain residency throughout the application.
For 1948 cases (female ancestor pre-1948) or to avoid consular backlog, file petition with Tribunale di Roma via Italian counsel.
€600 per applicant non-refundable.
Submit the full dossier at the chosen path.
Wait for the recognition decision. Comune and court paths are typically faster than the consulate path.
Post-recognition, your vital records are transcribed into the Italian comune's civil registry — the formal record of citizenship.
Recognition complete. Apply for Italian passport at consulate or comune. You're a full Italian citizen with EU rights.
